Genitourinary Syndrome of Lactation – a new perspective on lactation related genitourinary symptoms

Genitourinary Syndrome of Lactation (GSL) is an emerging clinical concept describing the vulvovaginal and genitourinary symptoms that affect lactating and postpartum women driven by the hypoestrogenic state of lactation. Despite affecting a significant proportion of postpartum mothers, GSL remains widely underrecognized and undertreated, with no dedicated clinical guidelines currently available. This webinar will introduce GSL as a distinct clinical entity, review its pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, and evidence-based treatment options including the safety of vaginal estrogen during breastfeeding. New survey data on the prevalence of GSL symptoms and treatment gaps in postpartum mothers will also be presented. Attendees will leave with practical tools to identify and address GSL in clinical practice, across primary care, obstetrics and gynecology, and women’s health settings.
